About BUP files
A .BUP file is primarily a DVD IFO Backup file, standardized by the DVD Forum. It contains an exact copy of the metadata stored in an IFO (Information) file, which dictates how DVD menus, audio tracks, subtitles, and scenes are structured. Secondary uses include generic system backup files created by older Windows applications and quarantined malware files isolated by McAfee.
The main disadvantage of .BUP files is their lack of standalone utility. Many users mistakenly assume a .BUP file contains actual video data. In reality, it only holds instructions for playback. The actual heavy video and audio streams are stored in massive VOB files. As a result, you cannot directly play a .BUP file in most media players or web browsers. Furthermore, if a .BUP file belongs to a McAfee quarantine vault, it is deliberately encrypted to prevent execution, making it useless without the original antivirus software.
Converting a .BUP file is highly dependent on its origin. If it is a DVD backup, users often want to digitize their physical media. For web use or mobile playback, the goal is typically to rip the entire DVD directory (combining .BUP, IFO, and VOB files) into a single MP4 or MKV video container. If you merely need to fix a broken DVD structure, you can simply rename the .BUP extension to IFO. For generic backup files, conversion usually requires renaming the extension back to its original format. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.

The BUP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BUP converter.
