About VOB files
.VOB (Video Object) is the core container format used in DVD-Video media. Found inside the VIDEO_TS folder of a standard DVD, it multiplexes digital video (usually MPEG-2), audio (such as AC-3, DTS, or PCM), subtitles, and DVD navigation menus into a single stream.
Despite being an industry standard for physical discs, .VOB files present significant disadvantages for modern digital workflows. They are excessively large and are strictly limited to 1GB file chunks due to legacy DVD file system (UDF/ISO 9660) constraints. Furthermore, they are inherently incompatible with modern smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and web browsers. Most modern video editing suites also struggle to import or edit multiplexed .VOB streams directly without playback stuttering or audio desync issues.
To overcome these limitations, conversion is strictly necessary. For broad compatibility across web browsers, mobile devices, and basic editing software, convert your .VOB to MP4 utilizing the H.264 or H.265 codec. If your goal is to archive the exact quality of the DVD and preserve multiple audio tracks and subtitle layers, convert to MKV.

The VOB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VOB converter.
