About IDM files

The .idm file extension is a technical anomaly often shared between two distinct professional industries: desktop publishing and building performance simulation. Most frequently (approx. 20%), an .idm file is actually an InDesign Markup Language file that has been mislabeled or truncated from the standard IDML extension. These are ZIP-compressed archives containing XML data, used to save Adobe InDesign documents in a version-agnostic format. Users frequently experience issues here; attempting to open a .idm directly in InDesign may fail or trigger a generic import error because the software expects the full four-letter extension.

Alternatively, the file may be a BIM data exchange file generated by IDA ICE (Indoor Climate and Energy), a dynamic simulation tool for modeling building thermodynamics. In this context, the file is a 7z compressed archive containing model geometry, HVAC systems, and climate data.
