Most frequently, it functions as an InDesign Markup Language document used by Adobe InDesign. In the architecture and engineering sector, it serves as a BIM data exchange file for IDA ICE (Indoor Climate and Energy), a dynamic simulation tool backed by buildingSMART International. Finally, it appears as a binary game data archive in titles like Quantum Break by Remedy Games.
These files cause high user frustration because the extension is ambiguous. An operating system cannot differentiate between XML layout data and a 7Z compressed thermodynamic simulation. Furthermore, IDA ICE models are heavily proprietary. They lock your building physics data inside the IDA ecosystem. You cannot easily open them in standard CAD software without specific, expensive licenses.
To share the data, you must convert it. If you have an InDesign markup file, renaming the extension from .IDM to IDML is often the only step required. From there, export it to PDF or JPG for universal viewing. For IDA ICE files, you must use the simulation software to export the 3D model geometry to an IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) file, and export the thermal results to XLSX or CSV.
