The .MML file extension primarily stands for Mathematical Markup Language (MathML), an XML-based standard defined by the W3C on Wikipedia. These files describe mathematical notation and structure, allowing complex equations to be served and rendered on web pages. Alternatively, .MML represents a Music Macro Language file, which is heavily used by Nexon in the game Mabinogi to define custom music scores using plain text strings of notes and rests.
The primary disadvantage of an .MML file is its strict dependency on specific rendering engines. Raw MathML files look like dense, unreadable XML code if opened in a standard text editor. It is very difficult for a human to read or edit the code manually without making syntax errors. Furthermore, not all desktop document viewers or e-book readers support MathML natively, often resulting in broken formulas or blank spaces. Similarly, Mabinogi music files are proprietary to specific game engines and vintage MIDI software, meaning you cannot play an .MML music file in a standard media player.
