The .IDML (InDesign Markup Language) file is an interchangeable desktop publishing format created by Adobe. It is essentially a ZIP archive containing a complex structure of XML files that define a document's layout, master pages, typography, and graphic placement. Designers primarily use it to save Adobe InDesign layouts for backward compatibility, allowing newer documents to be opened in older versions of the software or imported into competing products like Affinity Publisher.
Users frequently need to convert .IDML files because they are useless to anyone without professional design software. You cannot view an .IDML file natively in web browsers, and it requires expensive subscriptions to open. Furthermore, the format does not embed high-resolution images; it only links to them. This means sharing an .IDML file without its associated 'Links' folder often results in broken, incomplete layouts.
The most requested target format is PDF, which permanently locks the layout, fonts, and images for easy viewing and printing. If text extraction is the goal, converting to DOCX is an option, though you will lose precise positioning and typographic styles.
