About IND files

The .IND file is most commonly a MapInfo Table Index file utilized by MapInfo Professional. It works alongside TAB, DAT, and MAP files to index tabular data and heavily optimize spatial queries. Alternatively, the .IND extension was historically used for early Adobe InDesign documents (before the standard INDD extension was adopted), or as a full-text search index generated by the dtSearch text retrieval engine.

The main disadvantage of .IND index files is that they are highly proprietary and completely useless on their own. For MapInfo, they require the accompanying dataset files and an expensive GIS software license to function. Standard web browsers and basic text editors cannot read them, and the format is entirely closed. Users typically need to convert the entire MapInfo dataset to standard, open-source target formats like SHP (Shapefile), GeoJSON, or CSV to share geospatial data without forcing recipients to buy proprietary software.

Because .IND files are specialized binary index or legacy document structures, they are notoriously difficult to convert directly. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IND file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted INDD, INDO 2025 DIRGTK, MAP, IDM, ID, INDT, IDML, DAT, TMP, PDF, ZIP, SID and 108 files.

The IND Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IND converter.
