About IND files
The .IND file extension represents a duality in the technical landscape, most commonly serving as an Index File for MapInfo Pro GIS software, or alternatively as a legacy or truncated project file for Adobe InDesign.
If your file originates from a GIS environment, it is a strictly functional component used to speed up searches within a MapInfo database. The critical constraint here is that an .IND file contains no viewable map data or attributes itself. It is merely a sidecar file that points to records in the associated DAT or TAB files. Users often attempt to convert this file expecting to see a map, but the file is useless in isolation. To convert MapInfo data to formats like KML, GeoJSON, or Shapefile (.SHP) for use in Google Earth or QGIS, you must locate and convert the parent TAB file instead.
Conversely, if the file is a graphic layout, it is likely a misnamed or legacy Adobe InDesign document (standardized today as INDD). These files are notoriously difficult to access without an active Creative Cloud subscription. They are proprietary and locked to specific software versions, meaning a file saved in InDesign 2024 often cannot be opened in InDesign CS6. For these files, the most practical conversion path is to PDF for universal viewing/printing, or to IDML (InDesign Markup Language) to strip away version restrictions and allow editing in older software or third-party tools like Affinity Publisher.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IND file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IND file to INDD, QXP, PUB, PMD, PM6, PM7, PM8, PM9, PM10, PM11, OMP or P65, you can use MapInfo Pro or similar software from the "GIS Data Indexing" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MDI, PUB, PDP, PM4, P65, COMIC, WEBTEMPLATE, PMD, SPUB, INDD, PM5 or QXP files to IND, try MapInfo Pro or another comparable tool in the "GIS Data Indexing" category.
The IND Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IND converter.
