About LDM files

The .LDM format is primarily associated with the Logical Data Model created by SAP PowerDesigner, an enterprise-grade database modeling tool. These files use XML structure to define database entities, attributes, and relationships in a platform-independent manner, sitting between conceptual designs and physical implementation.

The biggest obstacle for users is the proprietary visualization; while the underlying XML is text-readable, reconstructing the visual Entity-Relationship (ER) diagram without a licensed copy of PowerDesigner is virtually impossible. This creates a significant bottleneck for sharing database architectures with stakeholders or developers who do not have the expensive software installed. Furthermore, relying on a raw .LDM file for archiving is risky due to version compatibility issues within SAP's ecosystem.

To bridge this gap, users frequently need to convert .LDM files. For documentation and stakeholder review, converting the visual diagram to PDF, PNG, or JPEG is the standard workflow. For actual database implementation, the model is typically "forward engineered" (converted) into SQL scripts or specific DBMS formats.

*Note: A significant minority of .LDM files (approx. 26%) are unrelated to databases and are instead files encrypted by ransomware variants like LockBit or Conti. If your file recently appeared with this extension and cannot be opened, it likely requires decryption rather than conversion.*

Convert.Guru analyzes your LDM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted LWDM, IDM, IV, 3DVS and CBM files.

The LDM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LDM converter.
