About HKX files

A .hkx file is a serialized data package used by the Havok Physics Engine to store game assets like character animations, behavior graphs, and rigid body physics. These files are the backbone of movement in AAA titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Dark Souls. While efficient for game engines, .hkx files are notorious for being opaque binary blobs that cannot be opened in standard 3D editors. A major limitation for modders is the version mismatch: Skyrim LE uses 32-bit files, while Skyrim SE requires 64-bit, causing instant crashes if swapped without conversion. Additionally, because the format is proprietary, users must convert .hkx to XML (TagXML) for text-based behavior editing or to FBX to modify animations in Blender or Autodesk 3ds Max.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HKX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted NVX2, HKT, XML, DCX, TXT, FUZ, ZIP, PYD, CIA, MPKG, UASSET, MP4 and G3D files.

The HKX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HKX converter.
