About HKX files
A .hkx file is a proprietary game animation and physics data container developed by Havok. It stores 3D skeletal animations, ragdoll physics parameters, and collision meshes used by game engines. This format is heavily utilized in modern 3D video games, most notably by modding communities for titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4.
Typically, .hkx files are generated and managed using Havok Content Tools through specialized plugins for Autodesk 3ds Max or Autodesk Maya. The primary disadvantage of the .hkx format is that it is compiled and heavily optimized for runtime performance. It is a closed, proprietary format that cannot be opened natively by standard 3D modeling software without specific community scripts or engine-specific decompilers.
Modders and developers frequently need to convert .hkx files back to editable formats like FBX for standard 3D editing, XML for plaintext data tweaking, or KF for legacy game engine compatibility. Standard online converters fail to process .hkx files because the binary data requires engine-specific deserialization. Often, only the original software or specialized modding utilities can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HKX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert HKX file to FBX, XML, OBJ, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL or PLY, you can use Havok Content Tools or similar software from the "Game Animation and Physics" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The HKX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HKX converter.
