About KF files

A .KF file is a 3D animation file containing keyframe data. It dictates how 3D models move, scale, and rotate over a specific timeline. The format was primarily developed for the Gamebryo game engine (previously known as NetImmerse), which powers classic games like Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Other less common uses for the .KF extension include exported animation data from Facebook KeyFrames (an Adobe After Effects plugin for mobile rendering) and temporary animation files generated by Apple Keynote.

The Gamebryo .KF format is highly proprietary, specialized, and notoriously difficult to handle. Because it only stores movement data and not the actual 3D mesh, a .KF file is completely useless without its corresponding NIF 3D model file. Modern 3D software like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot open these files natively. You must rely on community-built modding plugins, such as NifTools, to import the data.

To use these legacy animations in modern game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, you must convert the combined mesh and animation data into standard formats like FBX, DAE (Collada), or GLTF. However, standard online converters fail to process .KF files because the format lacks standardized documentation and requires linking to external mesh files to render correctly. This makes direct conversion nearly impossible without dedicated 3D software. While direct 3D format conversion requires parent mesh files, our analysis tools can inspect the .KF file, show internal text or hex content, and help you determine which software originated the keyframe data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your KF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted NIF, XMD, NFT and ALO files.

The KF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KF converter.
