About HKT files

The .HKT file extension represents a Havok Tagfile, a proprietary data format used by the Havok Physics engine to store asset metadata, rigid body physics, and animation sequences for video games. Unlike the compiled HKX files used at runtime, .HKT files often serve as intermediate or source files exported from 3D software like 3ds Max or Maya.

Users typically encounter these files when modding games (such as Skyrim, Fallout 4, or Kingdom Hearts) or reverse-engineering game assets. A common issue is version dependency: an .HKT file created with Havok 2014 tools cannot be opened by Havok 2010 tools, leading to frequent 'unsupported version' errors. Additionally, because the format is middleware-specific, it cannot be viewed in standard 3D viewers like Blender without conversion.

For editing or inspection, the best workflow is converting the .HKT file to XML. This makes the data human-readable and editable in text editors like Visual Studio Code. For 3D visualization, users should convert to FBX using the Havok Content Tools standalone filter manager.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HKT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HKX, XWB, 22, PST, EST, IST, UTC, BST and GMT files.

The HKT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HKT converter.
