About VMF files

The .VMF (Valve Map File) format is the raw project source for levels created in Valve Hammer Editor for the Source Engine. Used in games like Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, and Garry's Mod, these files store map geometry (brushes), entities, and texture references in a hierarchical text structure known as KeyValues.

The primary problem is that .VMF files are not playable game files. They are strictly blueprints that the game engine cannot read directly. To use a map in-game, you must "compile" the .VMF into a binary BSP file using specific command-line build tools (VBSP, VVIS, VRAD), a process that is often slow and prone to cryptic "leak" errors. Additionally, standard 3D modeling software like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot natively open .VMF files because they use Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) rather than standard polygon meshes.

Best Conversion Targets:

For Gameplay: Compile to BSP to load the map in the Source Engine.
For 3D Editing: Convert to OBJ or FBX (via plugins like Blender Source Tools) to render or modify the level geometry in standard 3D suites.
Note on Surveillance Files: A minority of .VMF files are proprietary video management indexes from Dahua CCTV systems. These should be converted to MP4 or AVI for standard media player compatibility.
