About BSP files
A .BSP file is primarily a compiled map file used by 3D game engines like Valve's Source (Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2), GoldSrc (Half-Life 1), and id Software's Quake engine. These files utilize Binary Space Partitioning to render complex 3D environments efficiently. While optimized for gameplay, .BSP files are compiled binaries, meaning they are not directly editable in level design tools like Valve Hammer Editor or standard 3D software like Blender. Users often face "Invalid File Version" errors when trying to load a map into the wrong engine version, and the geometric data is locked away from modification. To edit the level logic or geometry, you must convert (decompile) the .BSP back to a source format like VMF (for Source Engine) or MAP (for Quake/GoldSrc). For use in 3D modeling, animation, or rendering outside the game, the best workflow is converting the map geometry to universal formats like OBJ, FBX, or DAE. Less frequently, a .BSP file may contain NASA SPICE ephemeris data or Bruker spectral data, which require entirely different scientific toolkits.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BSP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted VMF, GMA, ZIP, NAV, PSB, JMF, AIN, VPK, RAR, MAP, ZTMP, FBX and PK3 files.
The BSP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BSP converter.
