A .vtf file is a proprietary Valve Texture Format image utilized by the Valve Source game engine to apply textures to 3D surfaces and models. Developed by Valve Corporation, these files are paired with VMT (Valve Material Type) files to define how light interacts with a surface. Standard image viewers cannot read .vtf files. They are typically accessed using community-built tools like VTFEdit or specialized plugins for Adobe Photoshop and GIMP. The primary disadvantage of the .vtf format is its strict, engine-specific nature. This makes them entirely unsupported by web browsers, mobile operating systems, or standard desktop viewers.
