A .GCM file usually functions as either a Gas Chromatography method file or a Nintendo GameCube disc image. In scientific laboratories, companies like Agilent and Shimadzu use the .GCM format to store instrument configuration parameters for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In the gaming community, .GCM files are 1:1 digital backups of proprietary 8cm GameCube mini-DVDs, used for emulation. Less commonly, the format is used for game level maps in the Beenox engine or commercial accounting data in Colucial Gescom.
To open scientific .GCM files, you must use proprietary software like Agilent ChemStation or Shimadzu GCMSsolution. GameCube .GCM ROMs are typically opened with the Dolphin Emulator.
Users often need to convert scientific .GCM files to share laboratory methods with colleagues who do not have expensive instrument control licenses. The disadvantage is that these laboratory files are proprietary Microsoft Compound formats containing binary data, making them unreadable in standard text editors.
