About MNM files
The .mnm file is a Character Studio Marker Name File. It is used in Autodesk 3ds Max to map raw motion capture marker data to a biped animation skeleton. It serves as a translation dictionary between external mocap data formats and the internal 3ds Max rig.
To use this file, you must open it via the Character Studio module inside Autodesk 3ds Max. The .mnm format is heavily restricted. It is a proprietary settings file, not a standard 3D model or animation file. It requires an expensive Autodesk subscription to utilize properly. Because it does not contain actual geometry, textures, or keyframes, standard online converters completely fail to process it.
The best conversion targets for a .mnm file are plain text formats like TXT or CSV, assuming you only need to read the mapping data outside of the 3D software. You cannot convert this file to standard 3D formats like FBX or OBJ because the geometric data does not exist inside it.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary mapping schema. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded text format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MNM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MNM file to NM, NMM, NCM, GCM or MN, you can use Autodesk 3ds Max or similar software from the "Motion Capture Marker Mapping" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The MNM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MNM converter.
