The .FCD file extension is heavily fragmented and used across several distinct, incompatible software ecosystems. Most commonly, it stores 3D measurement data generated by FARO CAM2 Q hardware, or 2D CAD drawings created with FastCAD by Evolution Computing. Other notable uses include FidoCAD electronic schematics, legacy Flowcharter 3 diagrams, virtual disk images (Virtual CD Format), and even compressed 3D designs for Autodesk Fusion 360.
These proprietary files represent a massive headache for users. The formats are entirely closed, heavily relying on proprietary data structures like the Microsoft Compound format or customized binary architecture. This means .FCD files cannot be natively opened by web browsers or modern operating systems. Furthermore, accessing the data often requires maintaining a paid subscription or owning legacy, out-of-date MS-DOS era software. Sharing these files with clients or colleagues is almost always impractical without conversion.
To ensure compatibility, FastCAD files should be converted to industry-standard DXF, DWG, or flat PDF documents. FARO 3D measurements are best exported to STL, OBJ, or STEP. If your file is an .FCD disk image, it must be converted to an ISO to be mountable in Windows or macOS.
Because .FCD is a fragmented, proprietary extension, generic online converters completely fail to process it - they cannot guess which variation you have. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
