Extract text from Tajima embroidery designs (DGT)
To convert DGT embroidery designs to another format, you need Wilcom EmbroideryStudio or other Vector Image software.
To convert other file formats to the "Embroidery Machine Data" file type, you need software like Wilcom EmbroideryStudio or a similar tool.
The .DGT file is primarily a proprietary embroidery design file created by Tajima DG/ML by Pulse or Wilcom EmbroideryStudio. It stores digitizing data, including object outlines, stitch types, and thread colors required by modern commercial embroidery machines. A secondary use for the .DGT extension is an encrypted online exam data file for the Mettl platform, which interacts with secure environments like the Safe Exam Browser.
The main disadvantage of the embroidery .DGT format is its proprietary lock-in. It requires a highly specialized, expensive software license to open natively. The files cannot be viewed in standard web browsers, Windows Explorer, or macOS Preview. This creates heavy friction when sharing proofs with clients or sending jobs to operators who use different machinery brands. Furthermore, if your file is a Mettl exam file, it is heavily encrypted and physically cannot be converted or opened outside of a proctored environment.
To bypass these limitations, you must convert the file depending on your end goal. For standard industrial machines, convert to DST. For Brother consumer machines, convert to PES. If you simply need to send a visual proof to a client for approval, convert to a standard web format like PNG or a document format like .PDF/A.
