The .ESM file extension most commonly represents an Elder Scrolls Master file. These files are used by Bethesda Game Studios titles operating on the Creation Engine, such as Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Starfield. A .ESM file acts as a massive relational database containing core game data - including NPCs, items, dialogue, and world cell layouts. Players and modders typically interact with these files using the official Creation Kit or third-party tools like xEdit.

A secondary use for .ESM files is securely storing driver and vehicle activity data from European Digital Tachographs, such as those made by Continental VDO. They occasionally appear as game localization data files in titles like Batman: Arkham Origins.

Users often encounter problems with .ESM files because they are highly proprietary. In gaming, modifying a master file directly can corrupt game saves and break load orders. In the transport sector, tachograph files are legally mandated, strictly structured binary formats meant to prevent tampering, making them impossible to read without specialized fleet management software.
