About ECM files

The .ECM file extension most commonly represents an Error Code Modeler compressed disc image. It is used to drastically reduce the size of raw CD-ROM images (like BIN or IMG), making it highly popular for storing and sharing video game backups for emulators like ePSXe. Developed by Neill Corlett, this format works by stripping out redundant error correction data from CD sectors before the file is compressed.

While highly efficient for storage, .ECM files are heavily restricted in their native state. The primary disadvantage is that you cannot mount an .ECM file in a virtual drive, nor can you burn it directly to a physical disc. It must be decoded back into its original uncompressed format. Additionally, the .ECM extension is frequently used as a proprietary encrypted document container by Fasoo Secure Container, or as a DRM-locked screen recording format by PowerCam EverCam or Echo360. These corporate variations are heavily restricted, requiring paid enterprise software to open.

For game images, your primary conversion targets are standard BIN or ISO files. For encrypted documents or recordings, users usually want to reach PDF or MP4, though enterprise encryption blocks direct extraction. Because .ECM is either a specialized bit-level compression format or a proprietary encrypted container, standard online converters fail to process it. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ECM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted 7Z, BIN, RAR, CUE, ECMX, SUB, CCD, MACM, CHD, ZIP, ISO, PBP and ENC files.

The ECM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ECM converter.
