About ECM files

The .ECM format is primarily a Disc Image compressed using Error Code Modeler, a tool developed by Neill Corlett. This format is widely used in the retro gaming and emulation community to reduce the file size of CD-based game backups (such as BIN or ISO files) by stripping away redundant Error Detection Code (EDC) and Error Correction Code (ECC).

While this significantly reduces download times, it creates a major friction point: .ECM files are not directly readable by most emulators (like DuckStation or PCSX2) or virtual drive software. They are technically incomplete disc images. To use these files, they must be "un-ECMed" - a conversion process that rebuilds the stripped error correction data to restore the file to a standard BIN or ISO format.

Note: In corporate environments, an .ECM file might alternatively be a Fasoo Secure Container. These are encrypted documents used for enterprise Digital Rights Management (DRM). Unlike the game format, Fasoo files are locked to specific authorized devices and usually cannot be converted by third-party tools due to proprietary encryption.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ECM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted 7Z, BIN, RAR, CUE, ECMX, SUB, CCD, MACM, CHD, ZIP, ISO, PBP and ENC files.

The ECM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ECM converter.
