About BIO files

The .BIO extension serves three completely distinct purposes, creating frequent confusion for users trying to "open" the file. In the majority of cases (over 50%), a .BIO file is a binary BIOS/UEFI firmware update used by manufacturers like Intel and Biostar to patch motherboard systems. These are compiled binary blobs; they are not meant to be opened, edited, or converted by standard software, and forcing them open in a text editor usually displays gibberish. However, in the scientific community, .BIO files act as project files for BioEdit, a legacy sequence alignment editor. These contain critical DNA/protein data but are locked into an older, Windows-centric ecosystem. Finally, 3D artists may encounter .BIO files generated by Autodesk Mudbox, representing proprietary 3D stream data.

The BIO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BIO converter.
