The .ddd file format is primarily used as a Digital Tachograph Data file. It stores mandatory driving records, including driving times, rest periods, and vehicle speed. This data is collected by a commercial vehicle's digital tachograph to enforce European Union transport labor laws.

Users frequently need to convert these files because the .ddd format is highly restrictive. It is an encrypted, proprietary binary format designed specifically to prevent driver tampering. Standard text editors or web browsers cannot open it. Furthermore, reading the data usually requires an expensive subscription to fleet management software.
