About EMS files

The .ems file is primarily a proprietary CAD machine drawing file created by eMachineShop. It contains 2D or 3D part geometry, material specifications, and tooling instructions required to manufacture custom mechanical parts. In industrial engineering and IT, .ems also acts as an XML-based window macro file used by EPLAN Electric P8, a CAM machine setup file for ESPRIT, or an Event Management System trace log for Cisco servers.

The core disadvantage of the .ems CAD file is severe vendor lock-in. It is a proprietary format built exclusively for the eMachineShop manufacturing network. You cannot natively open these files in standard web browsers or import them directly into mainstream engineering software like Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks without encountering compatibility walls. This prevents you from obtaining competitive quotes from alternative CNC machine shops. Similarly, .ems macro and log variants are locked to their specific host applications, making them difficult to share or parse externally.

To break free from these ecosystem restrictions, you must convert the file. For 3D modeling and cross-platform CNC manufacturing, convert .ems to universal CAD formats like STEP, IGES, or DXF. For quick visual sharing, quoting, or web archiving, convert it to PDF or STL. Drop your .ems file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EMS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EMSX, EMS RESULT, EML, EMZ, EDZ, EPS, ESM, EMF, PDF, MHT, IVB, IDZ and JPG files.

The EMS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EMS converter.
