Extract text from EPLAN data archives (EDZ)

The .EDZ file format is an EPLAN Data Archive used primarily in electrical engineering to distribute component data, macros, and 3D models. Manufacturers create these files so engineers can import complete electrical parts directly into EPLAN Electric P8, a specialized Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) program.
However, this format presents severe disadvantages for users outside the EPLAN ecosystem. The software requires a costly commercial license. Standard web browsers and generic CAD viewers cannot open an .EDZ file natively. This creates a frustrating barrier when a manufacturer only supplies an .EDZ file but you need the raw 3D model for AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
Fortunately, an .EDZ file is essentially a renamed compressed archive. The underlying structure uses 7Z compression in about 83% of cases, while 15% use standard ZIP. The best conversion strategy is extraction. By treating the file as an archive, you can target the embedded contents. Inside, you will typically extract XML metadata, PDF datasheets, DXF 2D layouts, and STEP 3D macros.
This file format is difficult to open or convert directly because it acts as a proprietary data container. Often only the original software can properly read or export the structured electrical data into a working schematic. Standard online converters fail to process it because they do not recognize the extension.
