Extract text from EDZ files

B files are specialized compressed archives used primarily by EPLAN Electric P8 and the broader EPLAN platform to package electrical engineering data. These files typically contain specific macros (mac directory), part information (xml), and associated images used in Control Cabinet (Cabinet Integration) and electrical schematic designs. They are the standard delivery format when downloading components from the EPLAN Data Portal.
The main difficulty with .EDZ files is their proprietary association; while they contain standard file types, the extension prevents standard operating systems from recognizing them as archives. This creates friction for engineers who need to inspect specific assets (like a single texture or XML spec) without launching the heavy EPLAN environment, or for procurement teams who need to view part data without buying a software license. Furthermore, sending these files to clients who do not use EPLAN renders the data inaccessible.
To overcome this, the best "conversion" is often extracting the archive. Users typically convert .EDZ to ZIP or 7Z to unlock the contents using standard utilities like 7-Zip. Once extracted, users can convert internal image files to JPG or PNG for web viewing, or access documentation often stored as PDF within the package. For strictly archiving purposes, keeping the original .EDZ is best, but for accessibility, repacking as a standard ZIP is the industry standard.
