About ELM files
The .ELM file extension is a legacy container format most frequently associated with a Website Theme Package from the discontinued Microsoft FrontPage. These files acted as precursors to modern CMS themes, bundling layout definitions, color palettes, and graphical assets to style static websites. A significant portion of users also encounter .ELM files as Map Data Files for the open-source MMORPG Eternal Lands, where they store terrain geometry and object placement.
The core challenge with .ELM files is software obsolescence. Microsoft FrontPage was retired in 2003, meaning these proprietary theme packages cannot be opened by modern editors like Adobe Dreamweaver or Visual Studio Code, leaving valuable design assets trapped in an unreadable binary or XML wrapper. Similarly, Game Map files are strictly internal to the Eternal Lands engine and cannot be viewed in standard image viewers.
For web professionals, the best conversion workflow involves extracting the embedded assets to standard CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and PNG images for use in modern web projects. For gamers, converting the map data to a static JPG or PNG allows for strategy planning outside the game client. Note: If your file is plain text code, it is likely an Elm programming language source file, which compiles directly to JavaScript.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ELM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The ELM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ELM converter.
