The .ELM file extension is heavily fragmented and used across completely different systems. Historically, it served as a Website Theme Package for Microsoft FrontPage and Microsoft Office, storing color schemes, fonts, and layout graphics. It was also utilized as an eLeaRning Module for Adobe Flash to package interactive course content. Additionally, modern developers use .ELM for source code written in the Elm programming language, which compiles directly to JavaScript. You may also encounter it as a game map file for the MMORPG Eternal Lands.
Legacy .ELM files present significant disadvantages. Microsoft FrontPage and Adobe Flash are discontinued, rendering legacy themes and learning files obsolete and nearly impossible to open safely. Legacy themes are locked in proprietary archives, while Flash modules require obsolete browser plugins, posing severe security risks. They are not natively supported by modern web browsers.
