The .EMAIL file extension typically represents a saved email message, historically associated with the Windows 8 Mail app or legacy Outlook Express environments. While fundamentally similar to the standard EML format (RFC 822), the .EMAIL extension is a frequent source of user frustration because modern clients like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird do not map this extension by default. This proprietary lock-in effect means you often cannot simply double-click the file to read it, even if you have a capable email client installed.
