About ETM files

ETM files are proprietary map data archives used exclusively by World of Warcraft. They store coordinate arrays, terrain contours, shadow mappings, and spatial layout data required by the game engine to render the virtual environment. Modders and data miners extract these files to study in-game geography or reconstruct 3D landscapes outside of the live game server.

These files are primarily read by the live game engine developed by Blizzard Entertainment. Because the format is officially undocumented, the modding community relies on specialized, third-party applications like WoW Tools and CascView to extract and interpret the spatial data from the master game archives.

The primary disadvantage of the .ETM format is its heavily restricted, closed-ecosystem design. They are encoded as raw binary blobs and are frequently packed inside massive .CASC or MPQ master archives. You cannot open these files in standard 3D viewers or image editors. They require complex reverse-engineering to access and are entirely unsupported by web browsers and default operating systems, which makes sharing the raw map data highly frustrating.

When modifying or analyzing the game, users usually need to convert .ETM files into standard, accessible formats. Community tools typically convert the terrain meshes into OBJ files for 3D modeling, or export the shadow and texture maps as PNG or JPG images. Converting these files will usually strip away game-specific metadata, such as collision physics, proprietary shader flags, and NPC spawn coordinate hooks.

Because this format is proprietary and strictly tied to the game engine, it is notoriously difficult to open or convert natively. Often, only the original game client or highly specific datamining scripts can correctly interpret the spatial data. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, inspect the binary file, and show any readable text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ETM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EML, HTML, PDF, LSB, D2I and PACKAGE files.

The ETM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ETM converter.
