A .meta file stores metadata - data that describes other data. In software and game development, it typically dictates how an application should handle a specific asset. The most prominent user of this format is the Unity game engine, which automatically generates a .meta file for every asset in a project to track unique GUIDs and import settings. Other widespread uses include Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE) configuration files for Grand Theft Auto V, Zimbra email indexing files, and partial download trackers for Telegram Messenger.
The main disadvantage of a .meta file is its strict dependency on the parent software. It does not contain the actual 3D model, texture, or email body; it only contains the configuration parameters. Editing or deleting these files blindly will often corrupt Unity projects or crash GTA V mods. Furthermore, the format is entirely arbitrary: a .meta file could be formatted in XML, JSON, plain text (UTF-8), or compiled game engine binary.
Because the extension is heavily fragmented across dozens of platforms, standard online converters fail to process them.
