About GNO files
The .GNO file extension represents a Genogram document created by GenoPro, a specialized software used to draw family trees and genograms. Unlike standard genealogy files, a .GNO file captures complex relational data, including emotional bonds, medical history, and social relationships. While powerful for sociologists and genealogists, the format presents significant sharing hurdles. It is a proprietary format, meaning recipients cannot view the file without installing GenoPro, which is primarily a Windows application, making it difficult to access on macOS or mobile devices. Furthermore, older versions may use the Microsoft Compound File Binary format, while newer versions (approx. 76%) utilize a ZIP-based container holding XML data. To share these diagrams with clients or family members who lack the software, users should convert .GNO files to PDF or JPG for static viewing. For data interchange with other genealogy platforms like Ancestry or MyHeritage, converting the internal data to the standard GEDCOM (.GED) format is essential, though some visual nuances specific to the genogram may be lost in translation.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GNO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted GEDCOM, EMF, GED, XML, TXT, JPG, PDF, ZIP, EXE, JPEG, INDD, CIA and UASSET files.
The GNO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GNO converter.
