About PAINT files
A .paint file is a proprietary project file predominantly used by PaintCode, a Mac-only development tool that converts Vector graphics into Objective-C, Swift, or C# code. Secondary uses include pixel art projects from Pixilart and legacy graphics from Apple's Paintbrush app. The core disadvantage of a .paint file is its extreme vendor lock-in. PaintCode saves these files using Apple's Property list (plist) XML structure. Because the file stores mathematical path instructions rather than standard pixel data, it cannot be opened by web browsers, Windows operating systems, or major design tools like Adobe Illustrator. If you need to share a mockup with a client or a developer who doesn't own a paid Mac license, the native file is entirely unreadable. To break out of this restrictive ecosystem, you must convert the file. For web use and scalable developer assets, convert your .paint files to SVG. If you need to share a fixed-layout mockup or archive the design, convert it to PDF/A. For pixel art projects, converting to PNG or WebP is ideal to maintain lossless transparency.
