About PAINT files
A .paint file is most commonly a vector drawing project created by PaintCode, a development tool by Pixelcut used to turn visual designs into Swift, Objective-C, or C# code. These files allow developers to resolutely store vector paths, colors, and gradients in a structured plist (XML) format. Unlike standard images, you cannot open a .paint file in a web browser or standard image viewer like Microsoft Paint. This proprietary lock-in is a common issue for designers who need to share mockups with clients or archive assets without maintaining a paid Mac-only software license.
A secondary but notable use of the extension is for Pixilart projects, a platform for creating retro-style pixel art. In legacy contexts, .paint may also refer to MacPaint bitmap graphics supported by the macOS app Paintbrush. To make these files usable, users should convert vector projects to SVG for scalability or PDF for documentation. For pixel art or quick previews, converting to PNG or JPG ensures compatibility across all devices and web platforms.

The PAINT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PAINT converter.
