Convert ED to another file type
To convert ED drawings to another format, you need PTC Creo View or other Cad software.
Convert a file to ED
To convert other file formats to the "Lightweight 3D CAD Model" file type, you need software like PTC Creo View or a similar tool.
About ED files
The .ED file extension is heavily fragmented and used for multiple conflicting formats. Primarily, it is a lightweight 3D CAD model used by applications like PTC Creo View, CATIA, or CAD SUPER SX. It is also utilized as an eDrawings CAD viewer file by Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks. In non-engineering contexts, an .ED file is frequently a disguised PDF document, a legacy document from WordPerfect for DOS, or an XML electronic financial document used by the Central Bank of Russia.
Users typically need to convert .ED files because the 3D variants are proprietary and restrict collaboration. CAD-based .ED files require expensive, heavy desktop software or specific viewers to open. They lock geometry and manufacturing data behind closed algorithms, making it impossible to share files with vendors who use different software. They are entirely unsupported by standard operating systems. Disguised text or document variants cause extreme frustration because users cannot simply double-click them to open the text.
If you have a CAD model, the best conversion targets are universal formats like STEP or IGES. These standard formats allow you to import the 3D geometry into almost any CAD system, though proprietary metadata or specific visual textures will be lost. For disguised documents, converting or renaming to PDF or XML ensures immediate compatibility with any web browser or text editor.
Converting 3D .ED files is difficult because the formats are closed-source. Often, only the original native software can properly read or export the 3D data. Standard online converters fail entirely because they lack the expensive proprietary libraries required to decode the geometry. However, convert.guru offers a realistic workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. We will scan the internal structure. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format like a disguised PDF, an XML file, or embedded text, viewing or conversion may still be instantly possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ED file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The ED Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ED converter.
