About ED files

The .ed file extension primarily represents a PTC Creo View (formerly ProductView) Exchange Data file. These are lightweight 3D visualization files used to share complex engineering designs without exposing the heavy, proprietary source geometry from software like Creo or CATIA. While efficient for viewing, the format is a major bottleneck for collaboration; it is effectively "read-only" and cannot be opened by standard 3D tools like Blender or AutoCAD without expensive plugins. This proprietary lock-in forces users to install specific viewers just to rotate a model. Additionally, .ed files may occasionally originate from CAD SUPER SX (a Japanese 2D CAD tool) or legacy eDrawings exports. To bypass these restrictions, users should convert these files to accessible formats. For archiving and quick previews, convert to PDF or WebP. If you need to reference the geometry in other CAD software, attempting a conversion to STEP or IGES is the best approach, though the original parametric history will likely be lost.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ED file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted OL, EDZ, JPG, MODEL, CATPART and CGR files.

The ED Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ED converter.
