About DUF files

The .DUF (DAZ User File) is the primary file format used by DAZ Studio to save scenes, character presets, materials, and poses. Under the hood, it is a structured JSON file (often compressed via GZIP) that acts as a 'recipe,' detailing where 3D assets are located and how they are arranged. While efficient for the Daz ecosystem, this creates a major limitation: the file itself contains no actual geometry or textures - only references (pointers) to files in your library's /Data/ or /Runtime/ folders.

This dependency makes .DUF files notoriously difficult to share or use outside the Daz environment. Opening a .DUF file without the associated asset library results in 'Missing Files' errors or empty gray boxes. Furthermore, industry-standard tools like Blender or Adobe Substance 3D cannot natively interpret these JSON recipes. To use your Daz characters in game engines like Unreal Engine or strictly for rendering, conversion is mandatory.

For 3D interoperability, the standard solution is converting the scene to FBX (which retains skeletal rigging) or OBJ (for static meshes). For visualization and web use without the heavy 3D overhead, converting the view to PNG or JPG is recommended.
