The .daz file extension represents two completely unrelated formats, often causing confusion.
1. Trimble Machine Control Design (Industrial):
In civil engineering and construction, a .daz file is a compressed package used by Trimble machine control systems (like GCS900). It acts as a container - essentially a ZIP file - that bundles site designs, surface models (SVD, TTM), and linework (SVL, DXF) into a single file for heavy machinery. The primary limitation here is the proprietary wrapping; while the data inside is standard (often XML-based), the .daz extension prevents standard unzipping tools from recognizing it automatically. Engineers often need to inspect these files without firing up expensive software like Trimble Business Center just to check a version number or file date.
2. DAZ Studio 3D Scene (Legacy Creative):
For digital artists, a .daz file is a legacy 3D scene created with older versions (1.x–2.x) of DAZ Studio. These files store character poses, lighting, and camera setups. Modern versions of DAZ Studio use the DUF format. The challenge with legacy .daz files is compatibility; they often rely on absolute file paths for textures that may no longer exist on your drive, resulting in "missing asset" errors. They are also proprietary, meaning you cannot open them directly in Blender or Maya without first exporting them.
