The .DAZ file extension primarily represents a Zipped Machine Control Design file used by heavy construction hardware and software like MicroStation. A secondary, older use is for DAZ Studio 3D Scene files created by Daz 3D.
Professionals use Trimble .DAZ files to feed 3D terrain models and geographic data into automated earthmoving equipment. DAZ 3D scenes, on the other hand, store 3D character models, poses, and lighting setups for digital art.
Working with .DAZ files is highly restrictive. Trimble files are strictly tied to expensive, proprietary heavy machinery systems and specialized CAD software. DAZ Studio files are legacy formats (now replaced by DUF) that rarely store actual geometry; instead, they store references to external asset libraries on a specific local hard drive. This means sharing a .DAZ 3D scene often results in missing textures and broken meshes. Neither variation can be opened natively in web browsers or standard document viewers.
To make this data usable elsewhere, conversion is mandatory. Trimble .DAZ files are actually ZIP containers holding XML data. You can extract them to read the raw structural data. DAZ 3D scenes should be exported directly from the original software to FBX, OBJ, or .COLLADA (DAE) for use in Blender or game engines.
