The .DPX (Digital Picture Exchange) format is an ANSI/SMPTE standard primarily used in digital intermediate and visual effects workflows. It stores a single frame of uncompressed, high-resolution raster image data, usually captured from film scanners or digital cinema cameras. Because it retains 10-bit or 12-bit logarithmic color data, it is heavily used by colorists and VFX artists in software like DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro.
Despite its industry-standard status, the .DPX format is incredibly impractical for average users. The primary disadvantage is its immense file size. Because each file represents only a single uncompressed frame, a sequence of .DPX files for just a few seconds of 4K video can consume gigabytes of storage. Furthermore, these files are proprietary to professional post-production environments, meaning they are completely unsupported by standard web browsers, mobile devices, and native OS image viewers. Attempting to share a .DPX frame via email or Slack is usually impossible without downscaling.
To review footage, share a still online, or save disk space, conversion is mandatory. For web use or quick sharing, convert the .DPX to a JPG or WebP.
