About DPX files
The .DPX (Digital Picture Exchange) file is the industry-standard raster image format for digital cinema and high-end post-production, standardized by SMPTE. Unlike standard images, DPX files store pixel data with extremely high color fidelity (often 10-bit or 12-bit logarithmic) to preserve the dynamic range of film scans. While essential for visual effects and color grading in suites like DaVinci Resolve or Adobe Premiere Pro, this format presents significant challenges for general use. The files are typically uncompressed and massive - a single second of 4K video results in 24 large individual files - creating storage bottlenecks. Furthermore, standard operating systems and web browsers cannot natively display them, making previewing or sharing impossible without specialized tools. To overcome these barriers, professionals convert DPX sequences to ProRes or MP4 for playback, while individual frames are best converted to TIFF for high-quality editing or JPG/PNG for quick previews and web sharing via convert.guru.

The DPX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DPX converter.
