About DMG files
A .DMG file is an Apple Disk Image, a digital reconstruction of a physical disc used primarily for distributing software and installers on macOS. When opened on a Mac, it "mounts" as a virtual drive, allowing users to drag the contained application into their Applications folder. While efficient for the Apple ecosystem, this format creates significant barriers for users on Windows or Linux. These operating systems cannot natively recognize or mount the file, leaving the data inside inaccessible without specialized third-party utilities like TransMac or 7-Zip. Furthermore, .DMG files often utilize ZLIB compression or AES encryption, adding layers of complexity that generic archivers may fail to handle. For cross-platform compatibility, the most practical solution is converting the .DMG to a standard ISO image, which is universally recognized, or extracting the contents into a ZIP archive. Users intending to burn the image to physical media on non-Apple hardware should target the ISO or IMG formats.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DMG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DMG file to ISO, EXE, PKG, ZIP, TTF, JPEG, IMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD or QCOW, you can use Apple Disk Utility or similar software from the "macOS Software Distribution" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK, IMG or VMDK files to DMG, try Apple Disk Utility or another comparable tool in the "macOS Software Distribution" category.
The DMG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DMG converter.
