About DNC files

A .DNC file primarily functions as a Direct Numerical Control or CNC machine toolpath program. These files store plain-text or proprietary G-code instructions that tell automated manufacturing machines how to move. Secondary uses include DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) network configuration files. These are managed by software like LUNATONE DALI-Cockpit and store lighting setup data in UTF-16 (LE) encoding. The main problem with .DNC files is their lack of standardization. If it is a CNC file, a machine controller expects a highly specific syntax. Opening it on a standard PC without CAM software like BobCAD-CAM or Mach3 requires a plain-text editor, but the file extensions often confuse standard operating systems. If it is a DALI config file, it requires specialized lighting design software to parse the UTF-16 data. They are heavily proprietary to specific control systems and hardware setups.
