About DMT files

The .DMT file extension typically refers to two distinct, proprietary formats that often cause compatibility headaches for modern users. The most common variation is a geospatial map file created by legacy DeLorme software (now owned by Garmin), such as Topo North America or XMap. These files contain vector map data, routes, and waypoints but are locked inside an obsolete ecosystem. Users often struggle to open these in modern tools like Google Earth or ArcGIS, as the format is not natively supported by standard GPS viewers. To make this data usable, it is best to convert .DMT to universal formats like GPX (for GPS units), KML (for Google Earth), or SHP for GIS applications.

Alternatively, in the manufacturing and engineering sector, a .DMT file represents 3D triangle models used by Delcam software, specifically Autodesk PowerMILL and Autodesk PowerSHAPE. These files store triangulated mesh data for machining and prototyping. The friction here is cost and access: opening a Delcam DMT file usually requires an expensive subscription to Autodesk's advanced manufacturing suite. Engineers needing to view or edit these geometries in standard CAD tools (like Blender or SolidWorks) should convert them to widely compatible 3D formats like STL (for printing), OBJ (for rendering), or STEP (for solid modeling).

Convert.Guru analyzes your DMT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DGK, MTD, CSV, JPG, ZIP, XPS, PNG, MMD, TXM and MFD files.

The DMT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DMT converter.
