About DMT files

The .DMT file extension typically represents either an Autodesk PowerMILL 3D triangle model, a Delcam PowerSHAPE machining triangles file, or a DeLorme Map Data file. In the manufacturing sector, these files store 3D machining triangle arrays used by Autodesk PowerMILL and PowerSHAPE to generate complex toolpaths for CNC machining. In the mapping context, these files store proprietary geographic and topographic data for legacy DeLorme mapping software, such as Topo North America (now owned by Garmin). Additionally, the extension is sometimes used for PTC Creo material appearance libraries (stored in UTF-8 format) or as SQLite databases for the DMT Data Modeling Tool.

A major disadvantage of .DMT files is their highly specialized and proprietary nature. 3D .DMT models are native to Autodesk's advanced manufacturing suite, requiring expensive subscriptions to open. They are not standard 3D web formats, meaning they cannot be viewed in a web browser or shared easily with standard CAD tools. Similarly, DeLorme files use Microsoft Compound structures that are locked to deprecated software; without an old copy of Topo North America or specific Garmin utilities, the map data is entirely inaccessible.

Users often need to convert 3D .DMT files to standard mesh or solid formats like STL, OBJ, or STEP to collaborate with engineers using different CAD software. Map data files might require conversion to GPX or KML for modern GPS devices. However, standard online converters routinely fail to process .DMT files because they lack the proprietary parsing engines required for these niche formats.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because often only the original software can properly read or export the 3D meshes or map vectors. We can inspect the file and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as a plain text PTC Creo library or a SQLite database structure - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DMT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DGK, MTD, CSV, JPG, ZIP, XPS, PNG, MMD, TXM and MFD files.

FAQ

If you want to convert DMT file to SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID, IMG or DEM, you can use Autodesk PowerMILL or similar software from the "3D Modeling and Mapping" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to DMT, try Autodesk PowerMILL or another comparable tool in the "3D Modeling and Mapping" category.

The DMT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DMT converter.
