Extract text from plugin files (DLM)

The .dlm file extension is primarily used for Autodesk 3ds Max Plugin Modules, Synology Download Station Search Plugins, and Xerox Printer Clone files. In Autodesk 3ds Max, these files function as dynamic link libraries (similar to Windows DLL or EXE files) that add specific modeling tools, modifiers, or rendering capabilities to the 3D software. For Synology NAS users, a .dlm file is an archived search engine plugin that allows the Download Station app to query external file-sharing sites. It is usually just a GZIP archive containing PHP scripts and JSON data.
The main problem with .dlm files is extreme format fragmentation. Because entirely different systems use the exact same extension for compiled binaries, compressed archives, and raw data, operating systems constantly fail to open them correctly. Furthermore, 3ds Max plugins are compiled binaries and are strictly version-dependent; a .dlm compiled for a 2018 version of 3ds Max will crash a 2024 version. Synology .dlm files are also notoriously fragile, breaking as soon as target websites change their APIs. You cannot safely click and open these files without knowing their specific origin.
For archiving or code editing, convert Synology or Allplan CAD .dlm files to ZIP or GZ (GZIP) to extract their scripts safely. If you are dealing with obscure utility meter data or Oracle retail data stored as .dlm, convert it to CSV or TXT to view it in standard spreadsheet software. For executable 3ds Max plugins, direct conversion is impossible, but you can analyze the file to reveal its true format headers.
