About SPK files

The .SPK file extension is primarily associated with Synology application packages, acting as the standard installation container for software on Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM). Under the hood, these files are simply TAR archives that bundle the software payload (often inside a nested package.tgz), installation scripts, and metadata like the INFO file. A distinct but significant secondary use is for SilverBullet configuration files, which store settings for automated web testing suites.

The main challenge users face with .SPK files is the proprietary extension. While a Synology NAS handles them seamlessly, standard operating systems like Windows or macOS do not recognize them as archives by default. This creates friction for developers or curious users who wish to inspect the code, verify the INFO file, or modify assets without deploying the package to a live server. Similarly, SilverBullet configs are unreadable outside their specific environment.

To overcome these limitations, the best workflow is to convert (or technically, rename and extract) Synology .SPK files to TAR or ZIP. This allows immediate access to the internal folder structure using common tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR. For SilverBullet users, converting the configuration file to a plain TXT or JSON format allows for human-readable editing and backup.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SPK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SKP, SPKLAB, ESPK, OPK, ZIP, SKB, STL, PDF, EXE, DAT and DLM files.
