The .dup file extension serves two distinct, incompatible functions, creating a "black box" experience for users trying to access the content.

  1. Data Update Packages: Frequently, these are proprietary system updates for enterprise tools like MEGA HOPEX or avionics hardware from Dynon. Often merely renamed ZIP archives or XML definitions, they are designed for automatic software ingestion. Users typically encounter friction because these files are unreadable by standard text editors, and attempting to open them directly results in errors or gibberish.
  2. Duplicate Bridge Records: In the card game world, .dup files drive mechanical dealing machines (like Duplimate) and software like Bridge Base Online. The limitation here is accessibility; you cannot view these hand records on a smartphone, share them via email as a visual diagram, or print them without specific legacy software.
