About DD files
A .dd file is primarily a Raw Disk Image created using the Unix command-line utility dd (Data Description). These files represent a bit-for-bit binary replica of a hard drive, partition, or volume, capturing both visible files and deleted data. While invaluable for digital forensics and system backups, .dd files present significant challenges: they are often massive (equaling the total size of the source drive), lack internal compression, and cannot be opened natively by Windows Explorer or macOS Finder. Users commonly struggle with issues when trying to mount these images or load them into virtualization software like VirtualBox or VMware Workstation. To make the data accessible or bootable, it is best to convert .dd files to ISO for general mounting, VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) for Windows virtualization, or IMG for standard imaging tools. Less frequently, a .dd file may be a game data archive for the Apex Engine (used by Avalanche Studios) or a legacy compressed archive from DiskDoubler. For these cases, simply renaming the file to RAR or using 7-Zip may allow for immediate extraction.

The DD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DD converter.
