About CTG files
A .CTG file primarily functions as a camera catalog index file created by Canon digital cameras. Typically residing in the CANONMSC folder of an SD card, this proprietary format acts as an internal database to index and manage the order of high-resolution images. Another less common use case is storing medical data as a Cardiotocography data file for machine learning and bioinformatics. Users often discover .CTG files when browsing their memory cards on a computer and attempt to open them, mistaking them for actual photographs. The major disadvantage of this format is its strict, closed-ecosystem nature; it does not contain the original high-resolution photo, requires specific Canon Utilities to be read natively, and is completely unsupported by standard web browsers or generic image viewers. Because these files only hold metadata and occasional low-resolution thumbnails, converting a .CTG file to a standard image format like JPG or PNG will never restore your original photograph. Those photos are stored separately as JPG, CR2, or CR3 files. The format is notoriously difficult to convert because it is meant exclusively for the camera's internal operating system. Standard online image converters fail when processing it because they expect raster image data, not a proprietary database tree.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CTG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The CTG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CTG converter.
