About CGR files
The .CGR (CATIA Graphical Representation) file is a lightweight 3D visualization format developed by Dassault Systèmes for its CATIA software. Primarily used to improve performance in large-scale assembly reviews, a .CGR file contains tessellated (faceted) geometry rather than exact B-Rep surfaces. This makes the files significantly smaller and faster to load but introduces major limitations: they lack parametric history, editable features, and precise surface data needed for manufacturing. Because the format is strictly proprietary, opening it without an expensive CATIA license or specialized viewer is a frequent hurdle for engineers and supply chain partners. To make the 3D data usable outside the Dassault ecosystem, users typically convert .CGR files to universal formats.
