About CF files

The .CF file extension is a classic example of a "filename collision," used by over a dozen different software ecosystems for configuration and data storage. Most frequently, you will encounter this file as a configuration script for the KiriKiri Adventure Game System (used in Visual Novels) or an enterprise data file for 1C:Enterprise. In the Unix/Linux world, sendmail.cf is the critical configuration file for the Sendmail mail transfer agent.

The primary issue with .CF files is their ambiguity; without knowing the originating software, they are often unreadable. While many are plain text, others (like SendBlaster license files or Ansys CFX data) are binary, encrypted, or proprietary, making them impossible to open with standard text editors like Notepad++. This proprietary lock-in prevents users from easily viewing, editing, or migrating their settings. Furthermore, files from games like Command: Modern Operations are actually renamed ZIP archives, causing confusion when archive managers don't recognize the extension.

To resolve this, your conversion strategy depends on the file's internal structure. For text-based configs (Sendmail, some KiriKiri scripts), converting to TXT allows for universal editing, while PDF is ideal for archiving configuration states. For Command: Modern Operations files, changing the extension to ZIP or converting to a standard archive format is necessary to access the contents. For proprietary binary data (like 1C or Bently Nevada), conversion usually requires the original software to export to a standard format like XML or CSV.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XP3, NCF, XML, PNG, GSF, DF, 4, CY, CCF, SF, MCF and HCF files.

The CF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CF converter.
