About HCF files

The .hcf file extension represents a HART Device Configuration file, a critical format in industrial automation and process control. These files contain structured XML data that defines the operating parameters (such as span, range, and damping) for smart field instruments like pressure transmitters and flow meters. They are primarily generated and consumed by FDT (Field Device Tool) frame applications such as FieldCare or PACTware. While .hcf files are technically text-based, opening them in a standard editor reveals complex, nested XML tags that are difficult for humans to interpret without technical knowledge. Furthermore, these files are often locked into specific software ecosystems, requiring expensive licensing or proprietary DTMs (Device Type Managers) to view the configuration in a graphical interface. Users frequently need to convert .hcf files to PDF to create immutable documentation for safety sign-offs, or to CSV and XLSX to analyze device parameters in Microsoft Excel without needing access to the original engineering workstation.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HCF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XCF, HEIC, CURVES, SVB, NPV2, CF, AF, CCF and LCM files.

The HCF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HCF converter.
