About CY files
The .cy file is a compiled visual novel script used primarily by the Ren'Py Visual Novel Engine. Game developers use this format to store the compiled narrative logic, dialogues, and event triggers for popular visual novels like Doki Doki Literature Club. These files present significant disadvantages for end-users and game modders. Because it is a compiled binary format, it cannot be read or edited in standard text editors. The original human-readable source code is translated into this proprietary, machine-optimized format to protect the game's intellectual property and speed up loading times. Standard online converters fail to process .CY files because they lack the specific decompilation logic required by the Ren'Py engine. To edit the game's text or understand its underlying code, users typically need to decompile the file back into an RPY or TXT format. Be aware that decompiling often strips out original developer comments and formatting. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert without dedicated modding scripts. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The CY Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CY converter.
