About BDOC files
A .BDOC file is a digitally signed document container used primarily within the Estonian ID infrastructure and European eIDAS ecosystem. Internally, it is a ZIP archive formatted to the ETSI ASiC-E standard, containing the original files (documents, images) alongside XML-based cryptographic signatures.
The Problem: While highly secure for legal contracts, .BDOC files act as a "locked envelope." You cannot preview the contents using standard operating system tools, web browsers, or typical office software like Microsoft Word. To open them, recipients are forced to install specific government-issued software like the DigiDoc4 Client, which can be a significant hurdle for international users or those on mobile devices who simply need to read the enclosed contract.
The Solution: For viewing and archiving, the best practice is to convert or extract the contents.
For Viewing: Convert the container to PDF. This usually involves extracting the signed PDF inside or flattening the signature page into a printable format.
For Access: Since the format is ZIP-based, you can often treat it as an archive to extract the raw files (e.g., DOCX, JPG) stored within.
For Archiving: Convert to ASICE to ensure broad compatibility with standard European signature verifiers.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BDOC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BDOC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BDOC converter.
