About ARG files

The .ARG format is a dual-purpose file type primarily used as an AutoCAD Profile Export. Generated by Autodesk AutoCAD, this file essentially functions as a specialized Windows Registry script (.reg) that stores user-specific environment settings, such as support paths, crosshair styles, and template locations. While critical for migrating workspaces between computers, .ARG files are notoriously rigid; they are often locked to specific AutoCAD versions (e.g., 2024 profiles may crash 2023), and their binary-text hybrid nature makes them difficult to edit manually without corrupting the syntax.

A secondary, less common use (approx. 7%) is found in Capcom games like Resident Evil 5, where the extension acts as a Game Area Data Archive. These are proprietary containers holding level data or assets, completely unreadable by standard software.

Conversion & Handling:

For AutoCAD: The most practical conversion is to REG (Registry Key) for direct system integration, or TXT (Text) for safe viewing and debugging of path variables.
For Archiving/Sharing: Converting the text content to PDF ensures a stable, non-editable record of company standards.
