About AWF files

The .awf extension is a classic example of a "filename collision," where multiple industry-specific tools use the same abbreviation for their proprietary Work Files.

Most commonly (approx. 33%), an .awf file is a claim data package created by Artis Claims Solutions. These are Microsoft Compound files (similar to older .DOC or .XLS containers) used to bundle insurance claim data, images, and forms into a single "case file." Because they are deeply integrated into the Artis workflow ecosystem, they are not designed to be opened by standard office software. Users often struggle when trying to archive these as standard PDF documents or extract the raw text without the original $1,000+ industry software.

Alternatively (approx. 16%), the file is a CAD Reinforcement Workfile generated by Nemetschek Allplan, a leading BIM/CAD platform for architects and engineers. In this context, the file contains vector reinforcement details for concrete structures. Opening this in the wrong software (like a text editor) will result in gibberish.

Less frequently, you might stumble upon an .awf file from Avaya (Work Item File) or a legacy definition file from Adaware Antivirus. For archiving and accessibility, the best practice is converting the proprietary data into open formats like PDF for documentation or DXF for CAD drawings.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AWF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AVIF, AFW, ARW, SWF, ZIP, XLSX, PDF and CFS files.

The AWF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AWF converter.
