An .AWM file is primarily an Animated Wallpaper Project file used by the popular Steam application, Wallpaper Engine. It contains configuration settings, layer data, and file paths pointing to the image, video, and audio assets needed to render a live desktop background. Internally, the file is formatted using UTF-16 (LE) text encoding.
Because .AWM files are proprietary project files, they are extremely limited on their own. A major disadvantage is that they do not actually contain any media. They rely entirely on a paid, active installation of Wallpaper Engine to render the final visual output. You cannot open an .AWM file in a standard image viewer, video player, or web browser.
