To convert other file formats to the "HEIF Image Container" file type, you need software like Canon Digital Photo Professional or a similar tool.
About HIF files
The .HIF extension is primarily used by Canon cameras (such as the EOS R5 and EOS-1D X Mark III) for High Efficiency Image File Format images. Unlike standard 8-bit JPG files, Canon .HIF files store 10-bit HDR (High Dynamic Range) data using HEVC compression, offering superior color depth and dynamic range in a smaller file footprint. However, this advanced technology comes with significant compatibility barriers. Many web browsers, older image viewers, and social media platforms cannot natively display .HIF files, and opening them on Windows often requires installing specific HEVC Video Extensions. Users frequently encounter issues where the files appear "washed out" or cannot be edited in standard software without conversion. For universal compatibility, we recommend converting .HIF to JPG for web use and sharing, or to TIFF to preserve high-fidelity image data for editing in applications like Adobe Photoshop. Less commonly, .HIF files may be X-ray scans from Smiths Detection scanners or data logs from HÜRNER welding machines.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HIF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The HIF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HIF converter.
